Love & Marriage: Happy Anniversary

I meant to write this post a couple of days ago but life happens. Happy 29th anniversary (March 23rd) to my parents; Tom & Judy. What do you say about the most awesome parents ever? Not much but you do post some epic pics of them with some clever or cute blurbs. My dad doesn’t smile in most pics but all of these pics show his “happy face”. Seriously though, they have been an amazing example of what love can be. Through the good, the bad and the in between, they have stood strong…together.

Back in the day when they were two young hottie’s just kickin’ it.

All dressed up for some event or another. They’re pretty adorable.

All dressed up on my wedding day. The shenanigans of that day were epic!

Just hanging around the house being in love.

10 Things I’m Loving Right Now: January Edition

I try to do these at the end of the month as a reminder to be thankful and take time to find the blessings in my day-to-day life. I was in the hospital so I’m a little bit late. Better late than never, right? January was a pretty good month and a great beginning to 2015.

1.) My baby girl turned 24 on Jan. 23rd.

2.) My wife…just because she’s awesome

3.) A good cup of coffee. I’ve found a new appreciation for my morning cup. My afternoon cup. And sometimes, my night time cup.

4.) My fur baby, Hayley. She keeps me company during the day.

5.) Dancing out the stress. There is nothing I enjoy more than cranking up some music and gettin’ down with my bad self. My go to jam…Electric Lady by Janelle Monaé

6.) Inspiration in book form. This book allows me to study my bible and get inspired using stories that ‘real’ women can relate to.

7.) Discovering a new source for great accessories at Global Couture.

8.) Selma (film)

9.) My parents. I appreciate every day that I am blessed to have them here.

10.) My Grandma. January 21st would have been her 79th birthday. I am thankful for the years I had her here to love, nurture, teach and guide me and my daughter. I miss her everyday.

Looking Back: 10 Things I Lived and Learned In My 2014

This was a particularly trying year. I can’t say that it was all bad but there were definitely some very deep valleys to go along with the peaks. I am thankful that I was here for the turmoil and the triumphs. I have learned a lot about myself over the last twelve months; some hard truths have come to the light. Through it all, I am grateful to God for seeing me through another year.

1. I have lost 50+ lbs. this year. I haven’t felt this good in a long time. I still have quite a way to go in reaching my ultimate goal but I am well on my way. I’ve learned that being prepared will help to stop you from breaking away from your healthy eating routine.

2. I went to my 20-yr highschool reunion. I can tell you that I was a true gleek. I knew and was friends with lots of people but all of my closest friends were in choir. I learned that nothing makes you feel older than realizing you’ve been out of school for twenty years. Just saying that gave me achy joints.

3. I got to go to my first Seattle Mariners game. We had great seats that were right on the third base line. Also, it was Felix Hernandez bobblehead night. I learned that baseball fans are some of the happiest people on earth.

4. We went to New Orleans for our birthday this year. We had an amazing time, ate some of the most delicious food I ever had and my wife got to show me where she grew up. I can’t wait to go back! I learned that you need comfy walking shoes whether they match your outfits or not.

5. I lost my job. That is a very humbling experience. I learned that you should never get too comfortable. It also taught me that it is alright to feel your feelings but don’t wallow. Regroup and make a plan.

6. I had corneal transplant surgery. Another very humbling experience. You are very dependent for a few days and that can be difficult. I learned that people can be very helpful…if you allow them to.

7. Maya Angelou passed away. A woman who touched a nation. I love to read and hers was the first body of work I experienced as a young girl that was by an author that looked like me. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is the first book I read by her. My favorite quote also came from her. “I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass.”
I learned that living your best life, being true to yourself and kind to your fellow man is a beautiful way to live.

8. We went to see Lalah Hathaway at Dimitrou’s Jazz Alley…for the 2nd time. This time, she was with Ruben Studdard. It was an amazing show.

9. We celebrated our 1-yr wedding anniversary (11 yrs. together). Tomi is truly the mate that was created for me. Loving her is like food to my soul. I’ve learned that love changes; its work. But there is nothing, no situation, that love can’t conquer. We are strong individually but together, we are unstoppable.

10. My baby girl got her first place. She also got engaged. I am overwhelmed with emotions over it all. She’s always been/ will be my baby. Now, I see her as a woman and I am not ready.

All in all, 2014 has been a year of growth. I look forward to 2015 as a year to walk in the power of the lessons I’ve learned. I bid a fond farewell to 2014 and welcome the new year with open arms. Most importantly, I’m choosing to live by choice and make life happen instead of allowing life to happen to me?

A Month Of Blessings – Day 1

My intention was to do my “10 Things” post for two months since I forgot April and May just ended. I have decided to do something different though.
I am thankful every day, all day for my life but for this month, my birthday month, I am going to post a picture each day of something I am thankful for and a blurb saying why. I have been having a hard time mentally and emotionally lately and as I near completion of another year of life, I feel like I need to remind myself how blessed I am.
Here we go…

Day 1

Tomi...my wife

I am so blessed to have this beautiful soul in my life. She is there to shore me up when I need a bit of help with bearing my life load. She makes me laugh, tells me I’m beautiful and she is my very best friend. She also has a June Birthday!

10 Things I’m Loving Right Now…January Edition

I am a few days behind but this has been a busy few days. At any rate, here we go!

1.) My mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health. Some days are harder than others but I am here and every day I’m blessed to see is another opportunity to be better.

2.) Tomi – If I could have created my perfect mate, I couldn’t have done better. She is honest, supportive and loves me just the way I am.

3.) Ideal Protein – down 11.6 in two weeks; just the boost I need on my weight loss journey.

4.) Veronica, Michelle, Jay, Keely, JaLisa; my children in order from oldest to youngest. JaLisa is the only one I gave birth to but the others know “Not flesh of my flesh, nor bone of my bone. Nevertheless, still my own.”

Veronica "Ronnie"
Michelle & Keely

5.) Employment – I am so thankful for a job that I love with co-workers that don’t get on my nerves most days.

6.) Music – I have an ever-changing playlist for every aspect of my life. If my life were a movie, everyone would want the soundtrack.

7.) Books – Whether or not it’s my nook or an ink-to-paper book from the library; I appreciate the distraction.

8.) A mild winter…so far.

9.) My parents – just because they’re awesome.

10.) Making it through the first month of 2014.

10 Things I Loved About 2013

I started the feature “10 Things I’m Loving Right Now” when I first started blogging. The idea was to do the feature once a month on the last day of the month to remind myself that no matter how bad things seem I had at least 10 things to be thankful for; by the end of the year 100+ things (in case I miss a month or two). Well life happened and I kind of fell off but I am recommitting to it for the year 2014.
2013 has definitely been full of ups and downs for my family and I but I’m thankful to have made it through to the end and if God allows it, I will wake up in a new year. I thought it would be fitting to end this year with 10 things that I loved about 2013 so here we go…
10.) I am employed and I love my job and my coworkers; most of the time.

9.) I am blessed to have a roof over my head, a car to drive and money in the bank to pay my bills.

8.) I have wonderful and supportive friends and family; and friends that are like family.

7.) Music, poetry, crafting.

6.) I read a lot of good books

5.) Struggles-they help to remind me of my blessings

4.) Being mom to 5 wonderful children.

3.) Having both my parents; living and healthy.

2.) Tomi as my wife; legally.

1.) God has allowed me to see another year. Goodbye 2013!

Mrs. Thomas (I’s Married Now!)

We did it! Washington state made it legal for us to be responsible for one another; to be married. It seemed to take forever to get here but September 21st, 2013 @ 4:00pm arrived and we are now Mrs. & Mrs. Thomas. The ceremony was beautiful, the food at the reception was delicious, the drinks were flowing and the DJ kept folks dancing all night long (I will shout out all my vendors in another post). I can’t say that things went off without a hitch (a very drunk Groomette and the wedding cake being involved in an auto accident) but for Tomi & I, our day was pure magic.

It was a day filled with our friends, family and SO much love. My heart was so full that I spent the day smiling and crying tears of joy. I truly felt like the belle of the ball.

I was very happy to have my parents there. My mom didn’t get to be involved with the planning because of our distance but she got to be there to help me get ready on my big day. My daddy got to give me away. Just before he made the hand-off, he leaned in to Tomi and said “She’s your problem now.” I love my dad…LOL!

One of our older girls, Michelle, was able to fly in from California to be here. Also, our two youngest girls were bridesmaids. Some of my cousins, aunts and an uncle made it over from the west side of the mountains to share the love.

I couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect day.

Brides 2013 At TRAC In Pasco, WA

At an event like this, it is easy to get overwhelmed if you don’t have a plan and thankfully, we did. I was looking for flowers, cakes and dresses and Tomi wanted to meet with a travel agent. Tomi was such a good sport about going although I am sure that she would have loved to be doing anything else. I knew that it would be good for her to go just because she is very visual. As I am planning and trying to include her in the planning, there are things that I describe to her that mean nothing to her if she can’t see what it looks like or touch it to see what it feels like.
We tasted cakes; oh so many cakes. The most amazing thing to ever cross my lips was the pistachio cupcake from Cupcakes Bakery & Deli in Kennewick, WA. Oh-My-Lanta! I could have stood there and eaten every one. There was also a pretty amazing salted caramel one from Frost Me Sweet in Richland, WA. There were skin care vendors, Lipo vendors, DJ’s, venues, photographers, videographers and lots of other vendors. Add the 407 registered brides and whoever they chose to bring with them and you have one crazy crowd.
On our way over to find seats for the fashion show, Tomi stopped at the wine bar in the back of the room. Once we got a glass of wine, the whole affair became so much more fun. The fashion show was both lovely and fun. They threw in some funny and some kids that were super cute to keep everyone interested. We had a nice time and we got lots of info and even booked a vendor while we were there (it’s a secret). I will be glad when all of this planning a prepping is done and the big day is here but I have to say that I am enjoying all of it.

There was a wonderful fashion show
Plenty of gorgeous wedding cakes
This one with the bows was the prettiest (it could just be that I am partial to bows
Pretty vintage lace dress
A gorgeous ball gown
Taste the rainbow! Look at the handwork on this cake. Would you believe that this was done at the Walmart bakery?
