Its been 3wks since my last post!! I’ve had a lot going on with rolling out a new software system at work. I haven’t really had time for extra.
Anywhoooooo…I have been up and down over the past 3 weeks as far as my weight goes. So, one thing you should know is that when your band needs a “fill”, you can tell because you actually feel hungry and you eat more because you can. I didn’t have a fill at last month’s appointment but I should have. I’ve had a month of bad snacking and a little bit of overindulging and my numbers show it.
I am down 7lbs this week. I am down a total of 55lbs according to my scale. It seems that each scale I hit has fluctuations but are close enough. I am 1lb less than I was 3wks ago when I last posted. I’ll take that. Plus, I got a band fill this past Thursday so I should be back on track.
I’ve been hitting the gym eeeaaarrrrllllllyyyyy in the morning at 5am. My wife gets off work at 4am and we meet up there. Its hard getting up that early but I’m committed to doing the work.
This was not my best week. I gained 3lbs. i’m not particularly stressed about it but I know I can do better. I think its a combo of late-night eating and more carbs than usual. Plus, this last week wa pretty sedentary. In other words, I need to do better. No other changes to report at this time.
I missed a week but that was on purpose because I was upset by last week’s weight and I chose to wallow in it for a bit.
9/30/16-i gained back all of the pounds from last week. It was my cycle week and I was back on solid foods and I went a little crazy. I’m not making excuses; it is what it is. I’ve got to track all the things that could be a hindrance; what works, what doesn’t.
10/7/16-I’m down -5lbs. Yes!
I had an appointment with Dr. Fox (My surgeon) last week. I’ll have an appointment every month for the first year. Well, it really helped me out things into perspective. I have lost 7lbs this month. I should be looking to lose 7-11lbs per month which translates to approximately 1-3lbs weekly). Anything more than that is a rarity and not realistic. The weekly weigh-ins are important for helping you monitor your progress but ultimately, it’s about consistent and steady changes that bring the losses. I’ve been too focused on the weekly numbers and not the process and the journey overall.
I also need to celebrate my non-scale victories. Last weekend, we went to an amazing gospel concert in downtown Seattle. Festival of Praise Tour is definitely worth catching if it comes to your town. Well, we Uber’d to the venue since we didn’t want to be all sweaty from walking. But, we walked back to the hotel after the show. I walked a half mile without stopping. No back pain, no stopping to find someplace to sit. It felt good to be able to do that when just months ago, there is no way I would have made it.
Then, on Sunday, we were driving around and took a wrong turn and ended up near the Museum of Flight. I love museums and this one was on my museum bucket list. I have lots of bucket lists; travel, concerts, museums, food…just to name a few. That’s for another time. Anywhooo…Tomi asked if I wanted to go so we did. We walked around there for hours climbing in and out of planes and the space shuttle. Yes, they have a genuine shuttle from NASA. It’s the training module they used. We had a great time and outside of a few bumps and bruises, I made it.
Last one,I swear! For years I have been too large to wear anything from Torrid. Tomi decided I deserved a shopping trip so we went to an outlet mall that had Torrid and Lane Bryant. I went to Torrid and I can now fit the clothes; tops and bottoms. *frolic*
Happy Friday!!! Those that are keeping track realize that I skipped last week. I got busy and I just forgot. I have set myself a reminder on my calendar so hopefully, that will help me remember. I am one of those people who has to write everything down. People say I come across as very organized but truth is, I’m a bit of a scatter brain. Alright, enough about me; let’s talk about me.
Last week (9/16/16), I had a gain of +2lbs. I was a little bummed but I know that I ate a few things that I shouldn’t have so I completely expected it. We fall down but we get up, Right? This week’s weigh-in showed the results of a week where I did all that I was supposed to do and I am down -8lbs!! Woohoo!! For those trying to do the math and keep track, I am now down -54lbs and it feels AMAZING!! I’m down 4 dress sizes. I’ve had to buy new jeans but otherwise, I am still wearing my same wardrobe; everything just fits better.
Last weekend was very active so I didn’t focus on any planned exercise. Friday, we went to a concert at the Washington State Fair (Puyallup Fair-for the locals). It was Joe and Charlie & Wilson and the show was absolutely AMAZING!! Before the show, we spent lots of time walking around the fair and seeing the sites and sampling some food and beverages. We didn’t go too crazy and although I really wanted to, I did not have the elephant ear.
Saturday, we decided to spend some time just laying around at the hotel. We don’t get much time together during the week except for an hour in the morning when she’s getting in from work and I am getting ready to leave for work. Then, that evening we went to a Mariner’s game that we won tix to. We had great seats out center field about 20 rows back. Anyone who has been to a professional sporting event knows that walking from the parking structure and navigating the stadium to get to your seats is a good bit of walking and moving and I did it without pain and without getting too winded (non-scale victory). We got up Sunday and after a light breakfast, we headed home.
I have to say that I love how much energy I have now and how much easier it is for me to get up and get moving. Not to mention that I am much more willing to get up and do things now because it doesn’t cause me pain, fatigue and embarrassment like it used to. This journey is hard but is proving to be worth it every day.
I jumped on the scale this morning and I am down another -4lbs. Whoop!! Whoop!!!
Yesterday, I had my first ‘fill’ for my Lap Band. For those not in the know, the adjustable gastric band is filled with saline periodically to restrict the amount of food/beverage that the stomach pouch is able to hold. I was super nervous because I didn’t know what to expect.
First, while I was laying down, the doctor verified the position of the port using an ultrasound machine and then by touch just to verify and drew a target dot on my tummy. Then, he proceeded to take the longest needle ever known to man…about 3 inches (wink wink) and stuck that in the area and inserted it into the port. Then, I had to sit up with this giant needle sticking out of my tummy. A crazy sight to say the least. Then, I had to drink water as he pumped saline into the band to determine when it was tight enough. How is that determined? Based on how much liquid I can take in at what rate. I’ve gone from gulping down my water and protein shakes back to having to sip them like in the beginning; which is what you want. Then, I had to lay back down and then he pulled the needle out. That sensation is unlike anything I have ever experienced. The best visual I can give is imagine sticking a needle into a cork to it’s hilt…one of those dense type from a champagne bottle and then pull it out.
Also at yesterday’s appointment, we addressed my scars. I have 6 of them. I think the biggest on is about 15cm but they are all hypertrophic. Because of that, the doctor is treating them with triamcinolone. He injected it into each one of the scars in several places. It was…uncomfortable. He said with scars the size of mine, it would take about 3 treatments so I will get injections when I go back next month and then again after that.
OK, that’s all for now. I’ll be back for next weeks weigh-in.
I’ve got a little bit of catching up to do. I have been out living life and making memories and I missed a week.
8/26/16-I did not lose any weight. I think it was a combination of things but a big factor is that it was the beginning of my menstrual week. My body has always betrayed me during that time. I bloat, swell and retain water like nobody’s business.
9/2/16-I lost -2lbs. Not as much as I was hoping for but I will take it. I was still suffering from symptoms of my “lady time” so I was surprised to have any loss at all. I was able to introduce pureed food into my diet this week. That has been tough. There are things that I want to eat because I can but I am not supposed to have them. I am really wanting some mashed potatoes and gravy or mac and cheese. I’ve been being good though and sticking to things on my food list…mostly.
I didn’t do any planned exercise this past couple of weeks but the wife and I have been doing lots of travelling and I have been getting plenty of walking in playing tourist so I have definitely not been sedentary. Our most recent trip was this past weekend. We took an impromptu trip up to Crystal Mountain (Enumclaw, WA) and rode a gondola up the mountain and did some light hiking. It was FREEZING up there but lots of fun.
This is the face of a woman who is down another -3.6lbs. Whoot!! Whoot!!
This was a hard week. Because I take a large dosage of iron daily and because my diet is now very high protein, constipation is an issue. I had to take a day off this week because of it but all systems are working properly again…for now.
Also, I found myself craving food this week. Let me classify that. The size of my stomach allows me to get full on about an ounce of food so I am never really hungry. In fact, I have a hard time most days getting in the required protein shakes and water. Let me give you an example…
Example 1: Long hard day at work. You want to call up your friends and meet at the local watering hole for libations and appetizers. Denied!! It’s not that I will never be able to do that again but I can’t do that now.
Example 2: Date Night!!! What used to be dinner and movie isn’t the same when you are on a liquid diet.
Example 3: Your friend/family member comes to visit after having been gone for a while. Let’s go out to eat and have some drinks. Denied!!
I could go on and on. What I’m saying when I say I ‘craved’ food is more about the mental side of this journey. So many of our social interactions center around food and beverages. It is going to be a process to learn how to be social without the part that includes shoveling food into my face indiscriminately. I will have to meet for girl talk without the high-calorie coffee drink and pastry.
It’s all a process and I am rebooting my relationship with food, with people and with life. Just taking things one day at a time.
