Happy New Year: 2016

I decided to take a cue from my girl Kristi over at Sew Right Journals and make a specific, workable list of things I plan to accomplish in 2015. I figure if I am specific and I share, the more accountability I’ll have.
I found a book to help me with my goal of daily journaling and weekly blogging I’m already a week behind…LOL!). It’s called The 52 Lists Project: A Year of Weekly Journaling Inspiration by Moorea Seal.

image

My plan is that each week, I will share the list prompt with you and some of my list. At the bottom of each list is a call to ‘Take Action’ and I will share that too. Alright? Ready? Here we go…

The 52 Lists Project: List 1

List your goals and dreams for this year…
1.) Less social media
– no social media during my work hours (8a-5p) Mon – Fri
– no social media at all on Sunday
2.) Create a schedule (consistency)
– consistent wake/bed time
– pack my lunch for work and lay out my clothes the night before
3.) Read at least one book per month
4.) Go to church at least 2x/mo
– bible study counts
– live stream counts
5.) Travel!
– Get at least one passport stamp
6.) Journal daily & blog weekly

10 Things I’m Loving Right Now: February Edition

Here lately, it seems that I am always a day behind (at least). I blame the fact that I no longer have the structure of a job to keep me in check. There is nothing to keep me on schedule. I have been late mailing birthday cards and other sentiments and I pretty much have no social life anymore.
Anyway, I’m a day late but here is my list for February…

1.) Birthdays! My sister (Feb 21st) and my dad (Feb 27th) both celebrated birthdays. Also, our oldest daughter, Veronica and my oldest nephew. Plus countless other cousins and friends celebrated birthdays in February.

2.) This hottie! My wife is everything to me.

3.) No explanation needed…

4.) Discovering Global Couture because Lord knows I love me some cute accessories. I also love supporting a small, black-owned business.

image
I love a bow and some button earrings!

5.) My hairdresser!

My Mimi! My hairdresser since I've lived in the Tri-Cities (eastern WA state)

Mimi is the business and she always makes sure my hair is healthy and cute. I like to change it up!

Before & after

6.) My daughter and my mommy! Because they live 4hrs away, I don’t get to see them as often as I would like so every opportunity is a blessing.

image

7.) My smile! There was definitely a few rough patches but I made it through and I’m still able to smile.

image

8.) Valentine’s Day! This was the first time in 11+ years that we actually went out for this particular day. We just don’t get into it. My wife planned the whole thing which is saying a lot because she is not really a romance kinda chick. She bought me fancy under things, took me to an amazing dinner and then we went dancing. I had a blast!

image

9.) New life! I got a new, baby cousin on the 22nd. Her name is Meleeha Janae and she is beautiful. Congrats to CJ & Jazmine, the new parents! Also, congrats to my cousin Steph (Jazz’s mom), the new grandma!

image

10.) Weight loss! I am -60lbs than I was at this time last year and that feels AMAZING!

10 Things I’m Loving Right Now: January Edition

I try to do these at the end of the month as a reminder to be thankful and take time to find the blessings in my day-to-day life. I was in the hospital so I’m a little bit late. Better late than never, right? January was a pretty good month and a great beginning to 2015.

1.) My baby girl turned 24 on Jan. 23rd.

image

2.) My wife…just because she’s awesome

image

3.) A good cup of coffee. I’ve found a new appreciation for my morning cup. My afternoon cup. And sometimes, my night time cup.

image

4.) My fur baby, Hayley. She keeps me company during the day.

image

5.) Dancing out the stress. There is nothing I enjoy more than cranking up some music and gettin’ down with my bad self. My go to jam…Electric Lady by Janelle Monaé

image

6.) Inspiration in book form. This book allows me to study my bible and get inspired using stories that ‘real’ women can relate to.

image

7.) Discovering a new source for great accessories at Global Couture.

image

8.) Selma (film)

image

9.) My parents. I appreciate every day that I am blessed to have them here.

image

10.) My Grandma. January 21st would have been her 79th birthday. I am thankful for the years I had her here to love, nurture, teach and guide me and my daughter. I miss her everyday.

10 Things 2015 Will Bring For Me: Faith Over Fear

I stopped making new year resolutions years ago. I didn’t really think about why until recently. I had given up hope, out of fear of trying and failing, that my life would ever be different. I would always be fat. I would never start my business. I would never write my book. I would never try. I always talked myself out of trying with thoughts like ‘You don’t have money for that’ or ‘You don’t have a degree’.
For a long time, I chalked it up to being lazy. Then, God started placing things in my path that helped me realize that my lack of action has been based on fear and self-doubt. Fear of flying. Fear of success. Fear of failure. Fear of being told “no”. Then God started placing things in my path that told me my faith needs to be bigger. I need to move in faith and what I need will come. Failure and hearing “no” means I’m trying; ACTION!
I have decided that this is the year that I get out of my own way.
image
This is going to be a year of action for me. A year that I will accomplish some goals; take action on the plans I’ve previously been too afraid to pursue.

1. I am going to complete my business plan, get my business license, create my business website and get started as an entrepreneur.
image

2. One of my strengths is as a caregiver. I enjoy doing for others. It makes me feel good. I will spend more time caring for myself.
image

3. I am going to take more time to nurture my friendships.
image

4. I am going to continue to show my body how much I love and treasure it by making healthy choices.
image

5. I will make sure that love is a verb in my marriage. My wife means the world to me and I plan to work hard to make sure she knows it.
image

6. I will take control of what we eat by cooking at home more and eating out less.
image

7. I will make time to write; journaling, poetry and most importantly, start my book.
image

8. I will spend more time on a microphone. I love to sing and I love to talk. I’ve always wanted to do session work in a studio and voiceover/ voice acting work but allowed my fear to hold me back. NO MORE!
image

9. I will cut the clutter; physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Clutter can block your clarity and block your blessings. I’ve been getting rid of clothes and shoes I haven’t/ can’t wear. I’ve been getting rid of old mail, photos and papers that hold no importance. I’ve been removing toxic people from my life. I’ve have been getting rid of thoughts and ideas that have held me bound.
image

10. I will live!

2015 is going to be a stellar year! I’ll keep you posted.

Looking Back: 10 Things I Lived and Learned In My 2014

This was a particularly trying year. I can’t say that it was all bad but there were definitely some very deep valleys to go along with the peaks. I am thankful that I was here for the turmoil and the triumphs. I have learned a lot about myself over the last twelve months; some hard truths have come to the light. Through it all, I am grateful to God for seeing me through another year.
image

1. I have lost 50+ lbs. this year. I haven’t felt this good in a long time. I still have quite a way to go in reaching my ultimate goal but I am well on my way. I’ve learned that being prepared will help to stop you from breaking away from your healthy eating routine.
image

2. I went to my 20-yr highschool reunion. I can tell you that I was a true gleek. I knew and was friends with lots of people but all of my closest friends were in choir. I learned that nothing makes you feel older than realizing you’ve been out of school for twenty years. Just saying that gave me achy joints.
image

image

3. I got to go to my first Seattle Mariners game. We had great seats that were right on the third base line. Also, it was Felix Hernandez bobblehead night. I learned that baseball fans are some of the happiest people on earth.
image

image

4. We went to New Orleans for our birthday this year. We had an amazing time, ate some of the most delicious food I ever had and my wife got to show me where she grew up. I can’t wait to go back! I learned that you need comfy walking shoes whether they match your outfits or not.
image

5. I lost my job. That is a very humbling experience. I learned that you should never get too comfortable. It also taught me that it is alright to feel your feelings but don’t wallow. Regroup and make a plan.
image

6. I had corneal transplant surgery. Another very humbling experience. You are very dependent for a few days and that can be difficult. I learned that people can be very helpful…if you allow them to.
image

7. Maya Angelou passed away. A woman who touched a nation. I love to read and hers was the first body of work I experienced as a young girl that was by an author that looked like me. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is the first book I read by her. My favorite quote also came from her. “I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass.”
I learned that living your best life, being true to yourself and kind to your fellow man is a beautiful way to live.
image

8. We went to see Lalah Hathaway at Dimitrou’s Jazz Alley…for the 2nd time. This time, she was with Ruben Studdard. It was an amazing show.

image

9. We celebrated our 1-yr wedding anniversary (11 yrs. together). Tomi is truly the mate that was created for me. Loving her is like food to my soul. I’ve learned that love changes; its work. But there is nothing, no situation, that love can’t conquer. We are strong individually but together, we are unstoppable.

image

10. My baby girl got her first place. She also got engaged. I am overwhelmed with emotions over it all. She’s always been/ will be my baby. Now, I see her as a woman and I am not ready.

image

All in all, 2014 has been a year of growth. I look forward to 2015 as a year to walk in the power of the lessons I’ve learned. I bid a fond farewell to 2014 and welcome the new year with open arms. Most importantly, I’m choosing to live by choice and make life happen instead of allowing life to happen to me?
