Thanks to social media, I have been able to stay in touch with many of my friends from childhood and high school. This past weekend, I had the opportunity to reconnect with these people in person at my 20-year high school reunion. Let's just say that it was an eye-opening experience.
Though I knew and interacted with lots of people in high school, regardless as to their clique, I was not popular by any stretch of the imagination. I went to high school with many people that I have known since early childhood, years of league soccer, the Al Davies Boys and Girls Club and just from my neighborhood. I was a Gleek! Choir was my life so most of my closest friendships were with my choir mates.
Saturday night was the official reception. I don’t know what I expected but it was like high school with drink tickets. Everyone came in and worked the room; speaking to those they recognized and then fell into cliques; jocks, cheerleaders, student government, choir and then a hodgepodge of everyone else. I had a great time catching up with everyone but the whole experience helped me realize how non-social I am.
Ultimately, I went to a beautiful school and had some amazing experiences there. I was thankful for the chance to go back and reflect on that time in my life. Would I want to relive it? Absolutely not! I am thankful for the lessons that my high school years taught me and for the person they helped shape me into.
